We Need Biblical Oversight
Scripture: Acts 10:1-7Devotional Series: Are You That Light?
Teaching: Are You That Light? pt. 1 (WED 2024-07-03) by Pastor Star R Scott
I was out riding a bike one day and stopped in some shade to talk to a young man. He walked up to me and he said, “Can I ask you a question?” I said yes. He said, “How old are you?” I thought, "I’m old enough to know not to answer that question." So, I told him, and he’s like, “Wow, man, my dad’s seventy, and he thinks he can’t do anything anymore.” He said, “Can I take a picture of you?” I said, “For what?” He said, “You’re seventy-seven,” and he said, “He’s seventy, and he looks like he’s going to fall over at any minute, and I just want to show him what he could do if he’d move down here to Miami and go riding.” I said, “That’s what did it.” But anyway, long story short, he said, “I’m not having a good relationship with my dad right now. He’s a multi-millionaire, and he thinks I ought to be a millionaire by now, but I feel a call of God on my life.”
I just happened to turn in for shade, right? Just happened. Isn’t it great the way the Lord directs our paths? I won’t go into all of the details, but I spent over an hour talking with this young man because of the fact that so much of what he was saying was experiential and not biblical, foundational truth. He would say something, and I’d correct him, and he’d say something, and I’d quote him some Scriptures. In the middle of the conversation, he’d be talking to me, and then he’d go [speaking in tongues]. So, I let him do his thing. I said, “You know, I’m so thankful for the baptism in the Holy Spirit and speaking in other tongues.” He said [speaking tongues], and I said, “Yeah, praise God.”
He said, “Let me tell you about my angelic visitations.” So, I listened to a couple, and I said, “Angelic visitations are biblical. I don’t have any problem with angelic visitations, but let me share with you through the Scriptures why God has sent angels.” Amen? I said, “Make sure you don’t trivialize the supernatural or angelic visitations.” I said, “I’ll just cite a few for you and show you what I mean.” I began to cite a couple of angelic visitations. I ended with the angelic visitation with Cornelius and how God was going to send the gospel to the Gentiles and that the baptism in the Holy Spirit was for the Gentiles as well as for the Jews. I said, “It’s kind of that magnitude. So don’t trivialize the visitations of God.” I went on along those lines, and I’m just sharing that to make the point how important it is. This kid was zealous. This kid wanted to serve God, but he had no oversight, no pastoral oversight, just a “me and Jesus” mentality. I spoke toward that some and about his need to get into a church and be taught and to have a pastor.
