God Will Give You Rest

Scripture: Romans 12:1
Devotional Series: New Beginnings
Teaching: New Beginnings pt. 1 (SUN_AM 2023-01-01) by Pastor Star R Scott

Which way is the economy going to go?  I don’t know.  Are we going into a recession?  No, we are already in one.  Are we going into a depression?  I don’t know.  Are we going to see hyperinflation?  I don’t know.  What I do know is that I will seek first the kingdom of God; amen?  If we are entering this year with any anxiety in any of these issues, we need to stop and take hold of ourselves and ask, “Why am I in fear?  Why am I anxious?  Why do I feel the need to know what’s going to happen to arrive at peace?”  Does knowing what’s going to happen fortify you against it?  “Well, it’ll let me at least know what plans to make.”  If I were you, I would let God make some plans for you, such as, “godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6).  We live in an environment of covetousness that is beyond the imagination.  We all have more than we ever dreamed we would have, and yet how many of us are satisfied?  How many are ready to step back and lose some of it?

I like what Jimmy Swaggart said years ago, during another financial crunch with similar problems, “I have finally been able to arrive at peace, and was able to cast it all upon Him when I realized that the worst that can happen in this situation is that I’ll break even, because I started with nothing.  So, if I end with nothing, I just broke even.”  Contentment; amen?  Would you like more contentment?  Would you like to rest in God?  Then let’s read on.  Look at verse 6, “In all thy ways, acknowledge Him…”  In all of your ways, at every intersection, acknowledge God, look to God first.  In all of the research that you might do into these issues, acknowledge God. “I have heard from everybody, but I choose to believe that God is right”; amen?  It’s that ability to hear and trust, to believe in God.

Romans 12:1 says, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your spiritual service.”  Paul is compelling them.  This word beseech is such a strong word.  “I beg you.  Take into your heart the seriousness with which I’m speaking this by the mercies of God.”  Can we take just a moment to realize how merciful God has been to us to adopt us as His children?  Can we stop for just a moment and realize where we would be without Him today?  Where were you going when Jesus arrested you?  Where would you be today?  Many of us would not even be here.  Many of us would have lost our lives, given over to alcohol or drugs and the impure and profane lives that we would be living, lacking a knowledge of God, never having heard that sweet voice saying, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest…unto your souls.”  Where would we be without this beseeching of us to present our bodies as living sacrifices, wholly given over to Him as offerings consumed in totality?  We offered our lives to Him to be totally consumed, once we accepted Him as Lord and Savior; amen?  When we died in Him, and when we were buried with Him, we were no longer our own.  We are bought with a price, the precious blood of Jesus.  Nothing in our natural man, that we carry into this new year, is of itself profitable to make us succeed.
